Volunteer Work



AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PUBLIC OPINION RESEARCH (AAPOR):   Recently served as the Standard's Chair. Besides the Standard's committee served six years on the AAPOR Membership committee and seven years working on the AAPOR committee charged with establishing a transparency initiative for documenting survey methods. Served from 2016 to 2019 as the Co-chair of the Transparency Initiative Coordinating Committee. Besides committee work, I was on the AAPOR survey refusal task force that produced a report that defines; what is a refusal?; How to avoid refusals?; How to convert refusals?; and how do we better protect the rights of respondents who choose not to participate? Other AAPOR roles include conference committee volunteer - reviewing abstract submissions and helping select and organize sessions for AAPOR Conferences. Served as a docent for new AAPOR members many conferences and helped setup and guide people who attend conference poster sessions.

COLLEGE PARK BERWYN DISTRICT CIVIC ASSOCIATION (BDCA):   Setup the BDCA web site in 2004, and continue to serve as the web site administrator for the Berwyn District Civic Association. President of the College Park Berwyn District Civic Association from 2004 to 2007. Founded in 1885, the Berwyn District Civic Association is the oldest active civic association in the State of Maryland. The BDCA meets twice a month, with public meeting held on the third Thursday of each month. The civic association publishes a monthly newsletter, plans community wide events, and advocates for or opposes any legislation that affects the welfare of the community. While I choose to not run for a fourth term as President of the Association in 2007, I continue to play an active role as the Vice President as well as maintain the BDCA web site.

COLLEGE PARK COMMUNITY FOOD BANK:   Volunteering to reduce hunger in College Park and the surrounding communities by regularly helping give out healthy food to individuals and families.

DC-AAPOR:   Helped setup and served 5 years as the web site administrator for the DC-AAPOR web site. Duties of this volunteer work includes ensuring that the web servers, hardware, and software are operating accurately, designing the web site, revising web pages, replying to user comments, and looking at traffic through the site. Also was the Secretary and Membership Chair for DC-AAPOR (2007-2008): DC-AAPOR is the largest local chapter of the American Association of Public Opinion Research (AAPOR). As a member of the executive council the secretary’s primary role was to help plan seminars and events, answer members’ questions, and recruit new members. In 2012, I received the first annual DC-AAPOR outstanding service award.

PRINCE GEORGE'S PRIDE LACROSSE and the COLLEGE PARK BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB:    Coached girl's lacrosse and helped start a new lacrosse program in Prince George's County. Also coached youth soccer rom 2008 until 2019 and received Edna Steffen Memorial Award in 2012 for recognition of outstanding service to the College Park Boys and Girls Club.    Past soccer TEAM PICTURES   -    Past lacrosse TEAM PICTURES

URBAN INSTITUTE MENTORING PROGRAM:    My contribution to this program is to help mentor junior staff at the Urban Staff. I have mentored seven different young researchers over the past six years.
